Energy Medicine - Reiki - Overview

Reiki, as is well-known, is a derivation of Buddhist philosophies, which a Buddhist monk name Masai Ukui derived in Japan during a spiritual retreat in the 19th century.

Reiki is a healing art evolved from Eastern visions of what our universe is and how it functions. Today,in the West, we grow master teachers, who, like their patients and students, have rushed up the ranks through an "instant" reiki system of weekend seminars, offering little, if any, foundation in Eastern thinking, and who are continuing to churn the master-making machinery.

Reiki (霊気, /ˈreɪkiː/) is a form of alternative medicine developed in 1922 by Mikao Usui. Since originating in Japan, reiki has been adapted into varying cultural traditions across the world. Reiki practitioners use a technique called palm healing or hands-on healing through which a "universal energy" is said to be transferred through the palms of the practitioner to the patient in order to encourage emotional or physical healing.

Mikao Usui

Origins of  Reiki

According to the inscription on his memorial stone, Usui taught his system of reiki to more than 2,000 people during his lifetime. While teaching reiki in Fukuyama (Fukuyama-shi), Usui suffered a stroke and died on 9 March 1926.

Dr. Mikao Usui was born in the village of Yago, located in the Yamagata district in Gifu prefecture, Japan on August 15, 1865. He studied in a Tendai Buddhist monastery as a child and was known as a talented student.

It is written in his memorial that he was knowledgeable in psychology, medicine, fortune telling and the theologies of religions around the world. He married a woman named Sadako, and they had two children, a son and a daughter.

Usui was fortunate enough to travel to China and several western countries to study. He worked as a public servant, an industrialist, an office worker, a reporter, the secretary to a politician, a missionary and as a supervisor to convicts.

He took time to become a Tendai Buddhist monk. It was during one of his lengthy meditations on Mount Kurama that it is said he received the inspiration for his Reiki system of healing. Some think that he was also inspired by teachings he learned in China and Tibet as well as acupuncture and other healing systems.

Usui experimented with his healing system for some time before opening his first school and clinic in April of 1922 in Tokyo. Usui wrote a small manual outlining his recommendations for the placing of the practitioner's hands and how the healing method should be used.

It was recently translated into English under the name "The Original Reiki Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui". This handbook gives today's practitioners a much clearer picture of Usui's original concepts of Reiki.

Usui's healing skills became well known in Japan. He treated people of all classes for free or a small fee. Students may have paid for their training or worked in exchange for the teaching. It was important to him that people learn to heal themselves. This is still a central tenet of Reiki teachings today.

Because of a 7.9 earthquake near Tokyo in 1923, Usui and his healing became even more famous. He and his students treated all who came to them. Many had been injured and over 140,000 people were killed in the earthquake and the resulting fires.

By 1925, Usui was so busy that he opened a larger school in Nakano. He traveled extensively, healing and teaching. His senior students remained at the clinic to continue their healing work.

During his few years healing with Reiki, he trained over 2000 people, but only a handful became teachers themselves. Dr. Chujiro Hayashi became his successor when Usui died on March 9, 1926 at the age of 62. He was laid to rest in Tokyo.

At a later point, his students paid for a large memorial stone that told of his accomplishments. It is the translation of this memorial that has added much to what we now know of Usui's life.

Today, Reiki is practiced all over the world. Mikao Usui's legacy lives on through the teaching lineages of his students. While many types of Reiki have been developed, many still practice Usui Shiki Ryoho, as passed from Usui to Dr. Hayashi, then to Mrs. Hawayo Takata, who brought it to the western world.

Five traditions of Reiki were established in Japan.

1. Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai

"Usui Reiki Healing Method Learning Society" is the name of the society of Reiki masters founded by Mikao Usui.

2. Reid Reiki Gakkai

"Spiritual Occurrence [and] Spiritual Energy Society" is the name given to the system that derives from the masters of the Rya Gakkai, and was led by Fuminori Aoki. These teachings still remain secret, but little by little, members of this association - such as Master Hiroshi Doi - have been sharing their knowledge with the rest of the world. In spite of this, it continues to be a hermetic society, nearly impossible to access.

3. Reiki Kai

Meaning "Enlightened Spiritual Energy Meeting (Association)" is the name given to the system that takes the name of a school of Japanese Traditional Reiki, and was established by Hyakuten Inamoto, a Reiki teacher with Western Reiki background. It differs from other systems in that it does not originate with the Gakkai, but instead comes from the Hayashi line, through Chiyoko Yamaguchi that remained in Japan.

4. Jikiden Reiki

Meaning "The Direct Teaching Spiritual Energy" is the name given to the original system that was taught by Dr. Hayashi, and was founded by Mrs. Yamaguchi and her son, Tadao Yamaguchi.

What we know of as Reiki in the West can be traced back to Hawayo Takata who was a student of Hayashi (Jikiden Reiki). The principal difference between the traditions is the use of set hand patterns for internal treatments instead of the intuitive skill of "knowing where to place the hands". Traditional Gakkai had a complex series of hand movements and Takata can be credited with making the system 'easier for Western minds to comprehend'.

5. The 'Western Traditions' have developed into three schools.

Usui Reiki Shiki Ryho -commonly translated as meaning "Usui's Spiritual Energy Style of Therapy", but a more literal translation is "Usui's Spiritual Energy Style of Medical Treatment" (medical treatment). This system is said to be as close as possible to the original practices of Hawayo Takata.

In this system there are three degrees of training - First, Second and Master.

Those trained in this system are expected to be able to demonstrate their lineage, by that I mean their link to a 'teachers family tree' which locates their Master and eventual Mastery.

Usui/Tibetan Reiki is the name given to the system that was developed by Arthur Robertson and later popularised by William Lee Rand and Diane Stein. This system is derived from Usui Reiki as taught by Takata and includes techniques from the Usui Reiki Ry

Unlike Usui Reiki Shiki Ry has four levels, commonly called First Degree, Second Degree, Advanced Reiki Training and Master/Teacher

Gendai Reiki Ha meaning "Modern Spiritual Energy Method" is a system that incorporates elements of both Japanese and Western Reiki, and was established by Hiroshi Doi. Doi was first trained in Western Reiki by Mieko Mitsui, a Master of the "Radiance Technique."

The Three PIllars of Reiki as currently taught in the West can be described as

Gassho"two hands coming together") is a meditative state where both palms of the hands are placed together, and was practised each time at the beginning of Usui's Reiki workshops/meetings.

Reiji-ha "indication of the Reiki power method" is a means of connecting with the Reiki power by asking it to flow through the practitioner three times, and is commonly split into three parts.

Chiry "medical treatment" requires the practitioner to place his/her dominant hand on the crown chakra and wait for hibiki ("feedback") in the form of an impulse or inspiration, which the hand then follows. During Chiry the practitioner gives free rein to the hand, touching painful areas of the body.

Reiki Chakras

What Are Reiki Chakras?

The different Reiki chakras are used in the practice of Reiki in order to bring focus and universal energy directly to the healer. Its purpose is to absorb all possible cosmic energy and distribute it evenly upon the body of the healer.

Clearing the different Reiki chakras is a good way to start the whole Reiki healing process. As the Reiki energy increases, the life processes from the earth to the spiritual world progresses as well, leading to a step in complete human growth. But clearing the chakras used in Reiki is dangerous if done without the proper guidance and proper supervision - if one is not fully ready to receive the chakras, a surge of energy can be overwhelming and harmful. It can lead to a possible disorientation, depravity, physical pain, and even mental breakdown.

The first Reiki Chakra is located at the base of the spine area. It helps in the body's survival, security, safety and the ability to be grounded to the earthly plane. Its physical functions are responsible for the excretion and digestion. It is responsible for the proper functioning of the small intestine and the colon, as well the sex glands, the hips, the legs, the lower back, and the rectum.

The second Reiki Chakra is found just above the genitals. It covers the individual's sexuality, self-esteem, personal power and the need to control one's emotions. It has physical influence on the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, the pelvic area, the lumbar spin, the kidneys, the bladder and the large intestines. It is also considered as the center for the body's cleansing, purification, and total health. If not attended to, it can have serious effects on the adrenal glands, leading to ulcer. It can also cause other nervous disorders and chronic fatigue.

The third Chakra is located two fingers just above the naval. When it is opened, it allows a person to function normally even when the person feels distressed. It provides the person the capability to connect, have long term relationships and can even influence into having a loving family and a happy home. If it is abused, it can have profound effects on the sympathetic nervous system, muscular energy, heartbeat, digestion and circulation. If this chakra is blocked, the energy moving from past diaphragm will be hindered thus the energy cannot be transmitted to other parts of the body.

The fourth Chakra is located at the eight cervical vertebra of the spine opposite the heart. It allows one to sympathize with the vibrations of other astral entities so that one can instinctively understand the greater energies and atmospheres. This fourth chakra has physical influence on the thymus (located at the center of the chest behind the upper breast bone). The thymus is responsible for the proper utilization of the amino competence factor, that helps create the body's immunity to disease.

The Alternative Reiki and Chakra Healing Methods

Chakra is described as the center of activity/energy that takes in and receives life force energy. The word chakra means "wheel" or "disk" that spins around its own axis and pins fast or slow, and spinning energy. It can spin in relation to the energy level of your system. The energy of chakra centres along the spine. The chakras are aligned in an ascending column from the base of the spine to the top of the head. The body has three types of energy centres.

The first energy centre is located in the region between the toes and the pelvic region and this is considered as the lower or animal chakras. The second is the human chakras that lie along the spinal column. And lastly, the higher or divine chakras are found between the top of the spine and the crown of the head.

The Alternative Reiki and Chakra Healing Methods

In different traditions, chakras are associated with many physiological functions. The chakras are thought to be associated with interactions of the physical, emotional and mental aspects of an individual. There are seven major chakras of the human body.

Usui Reiki Ryoho used Reiki healing without the use of medication and instruments, instead he used looking, blowing, light tapping and touching. He massaged the part of the body to be treated using these methods for two to three minutes and specifically gave them energy. It is thought the technique is known as palm healing because the energy is transferred through the palm to the patient from the environment. Traditional Japanese Reiki concentrates more on treating specific areas of the body.

In the whole treatment, the Reiki practitioner will ask the patient to lie down on a massage table. Comfortable and loose clothing is worn by the patient. Before the procedure the practitioner will meditate to be prepared mentally for the treatment. The practitioner will place the hands on the patient in different positions. The practitioner may also use the non-touching technique, where the hands are held few centimeters away from the body. The hands stay on each part of the body for three to five minutes before proceeding to other part of the body. Reiki treatment can be done in a far distance. The Reiki master can do the distance healing by concentrating on the area they want to treat and sending the energy to it.

Reiki and Chakra

Currently the alternative healing methods are widely used and the one of the more popular forms of alternate healing is the Reiki chakra. How does Reiki chakra use to heal the energy of the body? As mentioned above, there are seven major chakras in the body and Reiki master use these seven to treat almost every ailment of the body. Since the chakras are located from the head to the toes and from front to the back, the Reiki master start the treatment in the crown chakra at the crown of the head.

Some practitioners say that Reiki treatment uses chakras to get the universal energy. As of today, of all alternative healing methods - The Reiki chakra method is found the most effective. The Reiki chakra method treatment is the most popular among the alternative healing methods even in western country.
