What are the differences between acupressure and reflexology?
ReplyDeleteI have been asked this a few times over the years by curious patients. Reflexology uses finger pressure and other hand techniques on acupuncture points primarily on the hands and feet, sometimes also the head or ears. Reflexology refers to the notion that the hands, feet, head, ears (and other parts of the body) are homunculi or mirrors for the whole body, therefore you can treat illnesses or physical pain through the “reflexive points” in the hands and feet. According to the International Institute of Reflexology, the history of reflexology can be traced to 4,000 BC in China and Egypt but was introduced to the western medical world in 1915 by Dr. William Fitzgerald, who called it “Zone Therapy”.
DeleteAcupressure is a larger field of practice. It can be used on acupuncture points on the whole body in addition to the points on the hands, feet, head and ears. The history of acupressure is as old as Chinese medicine itself, over 5,000 years. Acupressure is a style of massage or bodywork which is based in Chinese medicine theory and practice. Acupressure uses acupuncture points to stimulate movement of qi, blood and body body fluids in the meridians and collaterals of the body to stimulate change in the immediate area but also the related visceral organs. Palpation at the surface of the body can also indicate pathological changes in the visceral organs. Acupressure is used to treat all manner of internal disease patterns as well as musculoskeletal ailments.
On a practical note, both of these treatments can be performed by licensed massage therapists (LMT) and certified massage therapists (CMT) who have had training in these subjects, however I would definitely ask what level of training the practitioner has in this modality and how many hours were spent learning these skills and theories.

In acupressure most of the points are concentrated in feet or hands.
2. The technique used to activate these points: The healing form of marma strictly the usage of any tool or object to activate these points. These points are extremely delicate and any damage can cause life long deformities which include paralysis, loss of sight and voice. On the other hand in acupressure external objects are used to provide pressure on the points.
